June Birthstones: Pearl and Alexandrite
Happy Birthday June Babies! June is a unique month for assigned gemstones.
The pearl is the only gemstone that is created from a living mollusk. Throughout history, the pearl has
been revered as an emblem of wealth, a sign of purity and even a representation of heaven in the pearly
gates. A classic gem, pearls have been current in jewelry designs throughout history. As cultured (vs
natural) pearls have increased the availability and lowered the cost to own, there has been a resurgence
in use of the pearl in modern jewelry.
Alexandrite is also a birthstone for June and has an unusual history as well. Named after the Russian
Tsar, Alexander II, this stone is now one of the most rare stones in modern gemology. A color change
variety of Chrysoberyl, the stone has been known to be emerald by day and ruby by night. It’s beauty
and rarity impact the price. Alexandrite usually sells for thousands of dollars per carat.
