July Birthstones: Ruby

“Ruby” comes from the latin word ruber, which means red. Considered one of the most significant gemstones, in history as well as present day, the ruby is included in the ‘precious’ category of stones; along with diamond, sapphire and emerald. Both ruby and sapphire are part of the corundum family of gems. The most desirable color for rubies is deep red, sometimes with a hint of purple. Often referred to as pigeon blood red, in ancient history these stones were believed to capture the power of life. The ruby is mentioned several times in the Bible, each reference indicating value, beauty or power.
