When you think about the August birthstone, most of us think of Peridot. But August has a second birthstone gem; spinel.
Peridot is one of the few gems that is natural in color and without treatments. Ranging from a yellowish green to a brownish green, with a vibrant grass green having the highest demand and value for jewelry. Peridot has been found in meteorites. Mining for peridot is most often done in Asia and Africa, but peridot can be found in the U.S. as well.
Spinel is a unique gem that may have less familiarity among gem novices but certainly deserves recognition. Spinel comes in many colors including red, blue, orange, pink and lilac. The deeper/richer hues are the colors in highest demand. Spinel is an 8 on the Mohs Hardness Scale, which makes for a good choice in everyday wear.
